Introduction

The Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary on civil rights matter. The Office directs, coordinates, and recommends policy for activities. The Office for Civil Rights is under the supervision of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights who reports to the Secretary and Under Secretary.

Office for Civil Rights

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is a sub-agency of the U.S. Department of Education that is primarily focused on enforcing civil rights laws prohibiting schools from engaging in discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or membership in patriotic youth organizations.

OCR’s mission is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence through vigorous enforcement of civil rights in our nation’s schools.
